Fudge Squares

Before brownies were trendy, our Mom made Fudge Squares.

1/2 cup shortening

1 cup sugar

3 eggs unbeaten

2 squares of chocolate (melted and cooled)

1 cup flour (sifted first)

1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 cup nuts

Cream sugar and shortening; beat in eggs one at a time. Mix in melted chocolate, vanilla and salt. Stir in flour, then add nuts. Pour into a buttered and floured 9 inch or 8 inch pan Bake 350 oven 25 or 30 minutes.

Frosting:

2 T. butter

2 T. cream

2 squares unsweetened chocolate

1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (sifted)

Dash of salt

1 tsp. vanilla

In a small pan, heat butter and cream until hot. Then add chocolate (cut into small pieces) after taking off stove. Stir until chocolate melts. Add powdered sugar and vanilla. Frost fudge squares when cooled.
